With upset bid denied, Eagles match Knights in season finale

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team's upset bid against visiting Bellarmine University in its 2014 season finale ended in a 2-2, double-overtime, tie Wednesday evening at Strassweg Field.

After falling behind, 1-0, early in the contest, the Screaming Eagles (3-10-4, 2-9-4 GLVC) struck for a pair of goals in the final 10 minutes of the opening period to go into the break with a 2-1 halftime advantage.

USI's first tally came in the 36th minute when junior forward Shelby Tarantino (Loveland, Ohio) scored on a header, from approximately three yards in front of Bellarmine goalie Hannah Poteet, following a beautiful pass from fellow classmate Emily Cummings (Cincinnati, Ohio). Cummings was credited with the assist for the pass that led to Tarantino's first goal of the year.

The Eagles took the lead with 26 seconds left in the first half when a corner kick by senior defender Maura Hulme (Westerville, Ohio) ricocheted off a Bellarmine defender and into the back of the net for her second goal of the year.

Bellarmine (13-2-3, 11-1-3 GLVC), which broke a scoreless tie with an unassisted goal by Lauren Holder in the 14th minute, answered the Eagles' challenge in the 80th minute on another unassisted goal, this time from Katie Fernandez.

USI, which was outshot in the second half, 13-0, had five shots in the second overtime period, including three on goal. Poteet, however, stopped each attempt as the Knights preserved the tie.

Sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Lofland (Indianapolis, Indiana) recorded 10 saves against Bellarmine's 12 shots on goal. Lofland finished the year with a 1-1-3 record in between the posts for the Eagles.

After suffering a four-match losing streak, the Eagles end the year with a pair of ties. USI also battled the University of Illinois Springfield to a 1-1 double-overtime decision Sunday in Springfield.
