SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team saw its hopes for post-season fade away with a 2-1 loss at the University of Illinois Springfield Sunday afternoon in Springfield, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles falls to 5-9-2 overall and 4-8-2 in the GLVC, while the Prairie Stars see their record go to 5-12-0, 3-11-0 GLVC.
The USI loss, plus wins by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Bellarmine University, knocked the Eagles out of the hunt for a spot in the GLVC Tournament. The Eagles ended today's action two-games behind UW-Parkside and two-and-a-half behind Bellarmine with one game to play.
The Eagles finish the regular season Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. when they host Bellarmine at Strassweg Field.
In the loss, USI fell behind in the first 10 minutes as Illinois Springfield got on the board at 8:59 of the first half. The Prairie Stars would hold the 1-0 lead through the intermission and increased the margin to 2-0 on a goal at 51:27.
USI cut the Illinois Springfield lead in half, 2-1, and got to within striking distance at 85:29 when freshman midfielder
Trevor Skeith (Gallatin, Tennessee) posted his first collegiate goal. The Eagles would get one more shot off in the finals minutes, but could not mount another scoring attack.
Statistically, USI would lead the match in shots, 17-5, and was even in corner kicks, 4-4.
