Eagles finish 2014 with double-overtime tie

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team could not hold a 3-0 lead and had to settled for a 3-3 double-overtime tie with Bellarmine University Wednesday evening at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles conclude the 2014 campaign 5-9-3 overall and 4-8-3 in the GLVC, while the Knights finish the regular season 8-7-3, 6-6-3 GLVC.

USI jumped out in front, 1-0, at 5:29 of the opening half when freshman forward Keaton Voegerl (Columbus, Indiana) found the back of the Bellarmine goal. Voegerl was assisted on his first collegiate goal by senior forward Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan).

After the intermission, the Eagles would push their lead to 3-0 before they were 10 minutes into the second half. Mathers gave USI a 2-0 advantage on his second goal of the season at 49:56, while Voegerl posted his second tally of the match at 54:01 to get the Eagles a 3-0 lead. Voegerl assisted Mathers' on his goal and was aided by senior midfielder Colton Tanner (Alexandria, Kentucky) on his second tally.

The Knights would break through the USI defense for their first goal at 64:50, igniting an explosion of three-unanswered goals in 13 minutes. Bellarmine cut the margin to 3-2 at 75:30 and pushed the equalizer into the USI goal at 77:55.

In the overtime periods, USI had the momentum, out shooting Bellarmine, 4-2, but could not take advantage of the 11-10 man advantage it had since 76:47 when the Knights' Jared Kemper was red-carded.

The Eagles and the Knights would finish the match tied, 18-18, in shots, but USI would post a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
