EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team's eight-match winning streak came to a shocking end Saturday evening as Quincy University upended the host Screaming Eagles 26-24, 25-15, 25-27, 25-15 at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (16-7, 6-6 GLVC), which honored senior outside hitters
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) and
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) as part of its Senior Night festivities prior to the match, lost a back-and-forth battle in the opening frame that saw 17 ties and seven lead changes.
Quincy (8-15, 3-9 GLVC), which hit .324 in the second set, used a 5-1 run early in game two to establish a four-point advantage. The Eagles, who fell behind by six later in the frame, used a short 3-0 outburst to cut the deficit in half; but Quincy answered with a 4-0 run to retake momentum en route to the 10-point set-two victory.
Set three was similar to the opener, with 12 ties and seven lead changes. USI faced match-point, but a kill by Ryan and another by red-shirt freshman setter
Alaina Page (Logansport, Indiana) put USI up 25-24. Quincy matched the Eagles at 25-25 on a USI serving error; but following a Quincy serving error, Ryan hammered down a kill to give USI the 27-25 set-three win.
Quincy, however, answered the Eagles early in the fourth frame as the Hawks won three straight points to begin the stanza and nine of the first 12 rallies to build a 9-3 advantage. USI closed to within four points moments later; but that was as close as the Eagles would get as the Hawks cruised to the 10-point, set-four win, closing the door on any USI comeback.
Junior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Wisconsin) led USI with 12 kills, while Ryan added 11. Freshman libero
Jessica Lee (Mackinaw, Illinois) and junior defensive specialist
Erin Goldschmidt (Smithton, Illinois) each had 14 digs to lead USI's defense.
USI concludes its 2014 home schedule Sunday at 1 p.m. when it hosts No. 23 Truman State University at the PAC. The Bulldogs (20-2, 12-0 GLVC), extended its GLVC-best winning streak to 18 games with a four-set win over Bellarmine University Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.
