NASHVILLE, Tenn.---University of Southern Indiana junior middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) put down a match-high 13 kills to lead the Screaming Eagles volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep of Midwest Region opponent Trevecca Nazarene University Tuesday evening in Nashville, Tennessee.
Winter, who was 13-for-21 with no errors, ended the night with a season high .619 attacking percentage, while also leading at the net with five total blocks.
Three other USI players ended the match with double-digit kills. Senior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) followed Winter with 12, while senior outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) and junior right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) totaled 11 and 10, respectively.
Sophomore setter
Quin Shoultz (Columbus, Indiana) led in both assists and digs with 42 and 14.
After establishing an early 10-5 lead in the opening frame, the Eagles used a strong attacking game to grab the set, 25-18, and take a 1-0 lead. USI held the Trojans to a .088 attacking percentage, while tallying a .324 percentage of their own.
Both teams battled in the following set, as it featured seven ties and five lead changes. Down 15-14, the Eagles used a 6-0 run to separate themselves from TNU, eventually clinching the set with a 25-20 win.
After trailing 3-0 in the opening of the third, USI went on a 6-0 run to take the leading position. It didn't take long for Trevecca Nazarene to catch up, however, as they remained within one point of USI and even tied it up at 17-17. The Eagles powered through using multiple-point runs to take the set, 25-22.
USI improved to 16-6 overall, following its sweep of the Trojans, and returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference Action Saturday at 5 p.m., for its final homestand, hosting Quincy University at the Physical Activities Center. The Eagles conclude the weekend Sunday with a 1 p.m. bout against GLVC West Division leader Truman State University.
Prior to the start of Saturday's match, USI will honor its two seniors, DeShaney and Ryan, both who have been with Head Coach
Leah Mercer for the past four seasons.
