EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team and Rockhurst University battled to soggy 1-1, double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles go 5-5-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the GLVC, while the Hawks finish the day 6-4-1, 6-3-1 GLVC.
The Eagles outshot the Hawks, 6-3, in the first half, but it was Rockhurst that took advantage of one of its opportunities to grab the lead, 1-0, Rockhurst scored at the 24:34 mark of the opening half and carried the lead through halftime.
USI would even the score at shortly after halftime when senior midfielder
Colton Tanner (Alexandria, Kentucky) finished off an Eagle corner kick at 57:51. Tanner was assisted on his second goal of the season by senior forward
Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan) and freshman midfielder
Riley Belding (Columbus, Indiana), who took the corner kick.
In overtime, USI, which had three shots in the second 10 minutes of extra time, and Rockhurst, which had a shot in each overtime time period, were unable to fight through heavy rains and a soggy field to score. The overtime tie was the second of the year for the Eagles and was the first for the Hawks.
The Eagles return to the road next weekend when they travel to Drury University October 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Missouri University of Science & Technology October 19 at 2:30 p.m. USI has two more home matches on the schedule for 2014 with McKendree University visiting October 24 and Bellarmine University coming to Strassweg Field on October 29.
