Rheinlander gives Eagles a double-overtime victory

Freshman scores twice in USI win

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana freshman forward Haley Rheinlander (Evansville, Indiana) scored her first two collegiate goals, including the game-winner, to propel the Screaming Eagles to a 3-2 double-overtime win over William Jewell College Friday evening at Strassweg Field. USI goes to 3-6-2 overall and 2-5-2 GLVC, while William Jewell watches its records go to 5-3-3 overall, 4-3-2 GLVC.

Rheinlander scored the game-winner off a double-assist from sophomore defender Gabriella Korte (St. Louis, Missouri) and freshman midfielder Maggie Pike (St. Louis, Missouri) with 3:32 remaining in the second overtime.

The Cardinals had the upper hand on the Eagles in the first half with a goal at 3:11. William Jewell would hold onto the 1-0 lead through the intermission despite USI out shooting the Cardinals, 9-6.

The Eagles would battle back twice in the second half to send the game into overtime. Rheinlander tied the game 1-1 with her first collegiate goal at 68:37 off an assist by Korte.

William Jewell would regain the lead, 2-1, with a tally at 79:24, but USI bounced back for a second time and sent the match into overtime. Junior defender McKinsey Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky) sent the match into overtime with 34 seconds left on her first goal of the season. Durham was assisted on the play by junior forward Shelby Tarantino (Loveland, Ohio).

Between the posts, sophomore goalkeeper Courtney Lofland (Indianapolis, Indiana) posted her first victory as an Eagle. Lofland allowed two goals, but made three saves to get the win.

The Eagles conclude the homestand Sunday when they host Rockhurst University for a noon contest. Following Sunday's match-up, USI has only two more home matches on the schedule for 2014 (versus McKendree University, October 24; versus Bellarmine University, October 29).
