USI rises back to .500 in 2014 EVANSVILLE, Ind. – On a rain soaked Strassweg Field, the University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team got a pair of second half goals 27 seconds apart to defeat William Jewell College, 2-0, Friday evening. The Screaming Eagles rise back to .500 at 5-5-1 overall and 4-4-1 in the GLVC, while the Cardinals go to 2-7-3, 1-5-3 GLVC.
USI and William Jewell battled through the mud in the first half with neither team able to take advantage of opportunities in front of the others goal. The Cardinals led in shots, 7-5, but the Eagles had the edge in corner kicks, 3-2.
In the second half, the Eagles broke through the Cardinal defense with a pair of goals, 27 seconds apart, take command of the match. Junior forward
Josh Weinzapfel (Evansville, Indiana) scored in the eventual game-winning goal off a cross by sophomore forward
Braiden Acton (Evansville, Indiana) at 66:38 of the second half. The goal was Weinzapfel's team-best third of the year.
USI would seal the victory 27 seconds later when freshman midfielder
Riley Belding (Columbus, Indiana) gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead at 67:05, converting a pass from senior midfielder
Colton Tanner (Alexandria, Kentucky). The goal was Belding's first as an Eagle.
After posting the 2-0 lead, the USI defense and junior goalkeeper
Auston Bruder (Evansville, Indiana) would preserve the victory and the shutout. Bruder picked up his third shutout of the season, facing 11 shots and making five saves.
The Eagles conclude the homestand Sunday when they hosts Rockhurst University for a 2:30 p.m. contest. Following Sunday's match-up, USI has only two more home matches on the schedule for 2014 (versus McKendree University, October 24; versus Bellarmine University, October 29).
