Schapker leads USI to double-overtime win

EVANSVILLE, Ind.  – University of Southern Indiana sophomore midfielder Leslie Schapker (Evansville, Indiana) scored 1:49 into the second overtime to give the Screaming Eagles a 2-1 victory over  Missouri University of Science & Technology Friday evening at the Goebel Soccer Complex. USI sees its record go to 4-0-1 overall, 2-0-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Missouri S&T finishes the day 0-2-1 overall and in the conference.
 
The double-overtime match was the second in a row for the Eagles, who allowed their first goal of the year in the win.  
 
Schapker, who recorded her second tally of the season, scored the game-winning goal within five yards and in front of the Miners goal. Sophomore forward Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) started the game-winning play with a cross from the right side.
 
The Eagles and the Miners slugged it out up and down the field during a scoreless first half. USI had the lead in chances, 7-4, and corner kicks, 2-0.
 
In the second half, USI got on the scoreboard first when freshman defender Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio) recorded her second goal of the season at 60:42. She scored in front of the goal off a cross from Schapker. The Miners responded nine minutes later at 69:56 to tie the score 1-1 and set the stage for overtime.
 
Despite both teams going scoreless in the first overtime, USI started to take the momentum. The Eagles outshot the Miners in the first overtime, 7-4, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 2-0.
 
Overall, USI led the Miners in shots, 17-12, and had an overall advantage in corner kicks, 6-3.
 
Eagles' sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) picked up her fourth victory  of the year. Lohmann, who was the NSCAA Division II Player of the Week for last week's matches, allowed one goal and made five saves.
 
USI returns to Strassweg Field to complete the homestand Sunday when it hosts Drury University for a noon match. Drury, which started the day 2-2-1, 0-1-1 GLVC, played at the University of Illinois Springfield this evening.
