EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team could not overcome driving rain and a defensive mistake in falling to Missouri University of Science & Technology, 1-0, Friday evening at the Goebel Soccer Complex. USI sees its record fall to 2-2-1 overall, 1-2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Missouri S&T finishes the day 3-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the conference.
The Miners struck for the only tally of the match at 18:56 of the opening half. Missouri S&T midfielder Alex Reifschneider picked up a loose ball and scored an unassisted goal after the USI defense tried to clear the ball from in front of the Eagles' goal.
USI played much of the second half in Missouri S&T's end of the field, but could not find the back to goal. The Eagles outshot the Miners in the final 45 minutes, 10-2, and had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-2. USI junior midfielder
Carlos Mayser (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and senior midfielder
Miles Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky) had the Eagles best chances, but Miner's goalkeeper Matt Jackson stop USI's attacks. Jackson made seven saves in the contest.
Overall, the Eagles outshot the Miners, 16-6, while Missouri S&T had a better share of the corner kicks, 6-5. Eagles' senior goalkeeper
Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmi, Indiana) took the loss in goal, allowing one goal and making three saves.
USI returns to Strassweg Field to complete the homestand Sunday when it hosts Drury University for a 2:30 p.m. match. Drury, which started the day 4-1-0, 1-1-0 GLVC, played at the University of Illinois Springfield this evening.
