EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Senior
Colton White drove in a first inning run, and junior
David Toth took care of the rest as the University of Southern Indiana baseball team downed Drury University in a non-conference game 3-0 Saturday evening in the Dunn Hospitality Classic.
White, who picked-up his fifth RBI on the season drove in junior
Brad Wannemuehler, who doubled to begin the Screaming Eagles (7-1) half of the first.
Toth (2-0) pitched 8.1 innings scattered seven hits, walked two and fanned four. His counterpart, Trevor Richards nearly matched him, as the Drury hurler pitched seven innings, allowed one run on six hits, walked three and struck out six.
The Danville, Illinois, native did not allow an extra base hit and only put three Drury runners in scoring position.
Senior
Adam Carver finished the contest off, as he fanned the final two batters he faced to earn his second save.
In the eighth inning with USI clinging on to a 1-0 lead, and two down, freshman
Andrew Cope singled and junior
Matt Bowles drove him home to give the Eagles a two run advantage. Senior
B.J. Willis then drove in USI's final run on a single to right, which scored Bowles.
The Panthers (5-4), however, threatened in the top half of the ninth, when they had two runners on and one out, but Carver shut the door.
The Dunn Hospitality Classic continues Sunday at 9:30 a.m. when Drury and the University of Indianapolis begin the day. UIndy then meets Augustana College at 1:30 p.m. followed by USI's tilt with Augustana beginning at 5 p.m.
