Eagles open home schedule Saturday

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The 17th-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team opens the 2013-14 home schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Lake Erie College (3-1) for a non-conference match-up. Eagles are 17th in first poll of 2013-14. USI was ranked 17th in the first NABC/Division II poll of 2013-14. The Screaming Eagles have been ranked 144 of the last 176 Division II ranking weeks since 2000, including 76 weeks in the top 10 and four weeks at number one.

USI wins season opener at KWC. USI won the opening round of this year's "Battle for the Bridge" series with Kentucky Wesleyan College, 70-61, at the Sportscenter in Owensboro, Kentucky. The Eagles have won seven of the last nine at the Sportscenter.

Non-conference foes have tough going against USI. USI has started the year with a non-conference win and is 177-19 (.903) against non-GLVC teams during the last 21 seasons. Of the 19 losses, two have come in the NCAA Division II Tournament Finals and three in the NCAA II Great Lakes Regional.

Eagles' tradition: Win the season opener. The Eagles have made it a tradition of winning the season-opening game, coming away victorious 28-straight seasons.

Lesson learned from win at KWC. USI came away with a lesson learned in the victory over KWC, take care of the basketball. The Eagles committed 18 turnovers, resulting in 24 Panther points.

Wischmeier near perfect in USI win. Senior forward Taylor Wischmeier was nearly perfect in leading the Eagles to the 70-61 victory at KWC. Wischmeier scored his team-best 16 points on seven-of-seven from the field and two-of-three from the charity stripe, while completing a double-double with 10 rebounds.

Nelson leads in rebounding and dishes career-mark.  Senior forward Aaron Nelson led the Eagles in rebounding versus KWC, clearing the glass 11 times. He also had a double-double with 11 points and dished out a career-high five assists.

Thomas has big second half. Senior guard Lawrence Thomas overcame a first half cut over his right eye to score 12 points in the second half versus KWC, finishing the game second on the team with 15 points.

Eagles shot the rock at the Sportscenter. USI shot 57.1 percent from the field (24-42) and 43.8 percent from beyond the three-point arc (7-16).

Lake Erie through four games. The Storm has won three of their first four contests to start the season, including an 89-88 squeaker over KWC at the Sportscenter. Senior guard Riley Thomas leads the Storm with 20.0 points per contest through four games.

USI leads the series with Lake Erie. USI leads the series with Lake Erie, 2-0. The Eagles won the last meeting, 105-64, at the PAC in 2009-10.
