Eagles end regular-season with sweep over Pumas

EVANSVILLE, Ind.---University of Southern Indiana junior outside hitter Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) registered her second double-double of the season, tallying 14 kills and 10 digs, as the Screaming Eagles volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (s5-6, 25-19, 25-18) victory on Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. The Eagles improve to 24-7 overall and 15-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, as the Pumas end their 2013 season at 11-21, 4-14 GLVC.
 
DeShaney led all hitters with the aforementioned 14 kills, erring just three times in 23 attacks for a blistering .478 attacking percentage. Junior outside hitter Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) and Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) chipped in with 10 kills apiece.
 
Senior setter Jorae Bradbury (Decatur, Indiana) tallied a match-high 41 assists, while senior libero Kayla Heldman (Greenwood, Indiana) came up with a match-high 18 digs. At the net, sophomore Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) was on fire with a match-high six blocks.
 
USI dominated the opening set, allowing just six points and a -.038 attacking percentage to Saint Joseph's College while the hosts torched the Pumas backline for a .720 clip with 18 kills, no errors in 25 swings. The second set was much of the same and the Eagles earned the 2-0 match lead with a convincing 25-19 win in set number two.
 
Though down 24-14 in the third set, the Pumas fought to try and stay in the game. Saint Joseph's prevented USI from reaching match point four times, as DeShaney put an end to their run with a kill of a pass from Bradbury. The Eagles took the final set 25-18.
 
The Eagles, who are the third seed from the GLVC East Division, open Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament play Friday against the GLVC West Division's second seed team, Truman State, at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois. The official GLVC Championship Tournament bracket will be announced late Saturday evening.
