EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team hits the road for four-straight matches looking for momentum in the second half of the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule. USI (6-3-1, 4-3-1 GLVC) starts the road swing at 5 p.m. Friday when it visits Lewis University (6-3-1, 4-3-1 GLVC) and reaches the halfway point at noon Sunday when it plays at the University of Wisconsin Parkside (6-2-2, 4-2-2 GLVC).
The Screaming Eagles finish the road trip October 18 and October 20 when they visit Maryville University and the University of Missouri-St. Louis, respectively. The final two-game regular season homestand features Truman State University October 25 and Quincy University October 27. The October 27 match-up with Quincy is Senior Day for the Eagles.
WEEK 6 EAGLE NOTES:
Fifth week for USI: The Eagles split for the third week in a row, falling in overtime to the University of Indianapolis, 1-0, and defeating Saint Joseph's College, 3-0.
In the GLVC. USI is tied for sixth in the GLVC, but is only a half-game out of third place in the standings. A surge in the second half of the conference schedule could earn the Eagles the right to host a first round game in the league tournament on November 3.
Kohnen and Geiger puts USI back on the winning path. Senior forward Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) and freshman forward Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio) combined to put the Eagles back on track in the win over Saint Joseph's. Geiger scored the eventual game-winning goal off a pass from Kohnen, while Kohnen sealed the victory with the second goal off a cross from Geiger. Junior defender Rachael Mayse (Evansville, Indiana) put the game out of reach with the third goal of the second half versus Saint Joseph's.
Offensive leaders. Sophomore Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) leads the way for USI offensively with 11 points on four goals and three assist. She also has a team-best three game-winning. Freshman forward Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio), who has become a starter over the last two weeks, is second with eight points on three goals and two assists. Geiger also has one game-winning goal.
Between the posts. USI goalkeeper Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) ranks fifth in the GLVC with a 0.71 goals against average (GAA). She also has five shutouts this season, one short of tying her mark as a freshman.
Eagles vs. Lewis: USI leads in the all-time series with Lewis, 12-4-1, but the Flyers took last year's match-up, 3-2, at Strassweg Field. The Eagles have won seven of the last eight meetings and are 6-2-0 in contests at Romeoville, Illinois. The last meeting in Romeoville resulted in a 3-2 double-overtime win by the Eagles.
Lewis in the GLVC and overall. The Flyers are tied with the Eagles for sixth in the GLVC after losing a pair on the road last weekend. Lewis saw its two-game winning streak stopped at Bellarmine University, 2-0, and McKendree University, 2-0.
Eagles vs. UW-Parkside. USI and UW-Parkside are deadlocked, 9-9-2, in the 20-game history of the series. The Eagles evened the series last fall with a 2-1 overtime victory at Strassweg Field.
UW-Parkside in the GLVC. The Rangers are a half-game ahead of the Eagles in the GLVC standings after a win at Bellarmine, 1-0, and a double-overtime tie at McKendree last weekend. UW-Parkside has won three of the last four matches.
