USI looks to stay on the right path

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team looks to stay on track when it starts its longest road trip of the year Friday at 11th-ranked Lewis University. USI (3-6-1, 2-6-0 GLVC), which plays its next four matches on the road, is slated to play Lewis (7-0-3, 6-0-2 GLVC) at 7:30 p.m. Friday before finishing the first half of the road swing Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when it visits the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (5-4-1, 4-4-0 GLVC).

The road trip concludes when the Screaming Eagles travel to Maryville University October 18 and the University of Missouri-St. Louis October 20. The final homestand of the season is set for October 25 and October 27 when USI hosts Truman State University and Quincy University, respectively.

WEEK 6 EAGLE NOTES:

Eagles stop losing streak in Week 5: The Eagles broke their five-match losing streak with a 3-2 win over Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon. USI had started its short two-match homestand with a 2-0 loss to the University of Indianapolis Friday evening.

Third ranked opponent:  USI will play its third ranked opponent in the last four weeks when it visits 11th-ranked Lewis Friday night. The Eagles lost to 16th-ranked Drury University three weeks ago and 20th-ranked Rockhurst University two weeks ago.

USI in the 2013 GLVC:  USI is sitting in 13th place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, but is still in the hunt for a trip to the league's post-season tournament. The Eagles need to make up a two-match deficit in the next six games to make their second-straight post-season appearance.

Three-goal game vs. Saint Joseph's.  The three-goal outburst in the victory over Saint Joseph's was the highest offensive total since the double-overtime victory at McKendree University.

Scoring leaders. Junior forward Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Michigan) continues to be USI's scoring leader this season with seven points on three goals and one assist. Senior forward Rush Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) and senior midfielder Corey Fundenberger (Lebanon, Indiana) follow with six points. Dugger is tied with Mathers with three goals this fall, while Fundenberger has two goals and two assists for his six points.

Eagles vs. Lewis: USI defeated Lewis, 3-2, in overtime last year, but trails in the all-time series, 22-19-0. The Flyers have had the Eagles' number in recent years, winning seven of the last nine meetings.

Lewis in the GLVC. The Flyers are second in the GLVC, a half-game out of first place, and are 5-0-1 in their last six matches. They also have shutout five of the last six opponents. Lewis is second in the GLVC in goals against average (GAA) and features Alec Pickett, who is the conference's top goalkeeper with a 0.46 GAA.

Eagles vs. UW-Parkside. The Eagles have won three-straight matches against the Rangers, but trail UW-Parkside, 15-8-1, in the all-time series. USI took last year's match, 3-1, at Strassweg Field.

UW-Parkside in the GLVC. The Rangers are tied for ninth in the league after a road-trip split last weekend, defeating McKendree University, 3-2, and losing to Bellarmine University, 2-0. The loss to Bellarmine stopped the Rangers' three-match winning streak.
