Eagles end five-game losing streak

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – University of Southern Indiana sophomore forward
Brandon Potts (Henderson, Kentucky) made his first collegiate goal a memorable one and led the Screaming Eagles to a 3-2 victory over Saint Joseph's College Sunday afternoon at Bundrant Stadium on the campus of Evansville North High School. USI,whichtopped its five-game losing streak, sees its record rise to 3-6-1 overall, and 2-6-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Saint Joseph's falls to 2-7-1 overall and 1-7-0 in the conference.
Potts gave USI the margin of victory when he scored off a pass from junior forward
Caleb Mathers (Clarkston, Tennessee) at 81:28. The Eagles would fend off two more shots from the Pumas to preserve the victory.
Between the posts, USI senior goalkeeper
Jeffrey Neidlinger (Carmel, Indiana) picked his third victory of the year. Neidlinger allowed two goals and made three saves to get the win.
The Pumas ignited the five-goal game in the opening minute with a tally at 38 seconds. That 1-0 lead would last seven minutes when the Eagles evened the match at 7:25.
USI senior midfielder
Miles Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky) evened the match with his first goal of the season. Durham was assisted on the play by senior midfielder
Corey Fundenberger (Lebanon, Indiana). The score would remain 1-1 through the intermission.
The Eagles took their first lead of the game, 2-1, at 61:15 when senior forward
Rush Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) recorded his third goal of the season. Dugger, who is now tied with Mathers for the team lead in goals scored this season, put the ball into the back of the net after gathering in a rebounding shot from sophomore midfielder
Logan Ball (Newburgh, Indiana). Ball and Fundenberger, who started the scoring rush at the goal, were credited with assists.
Saint Joseph's, however, did not go quietly and tied the match, 2-2, less than three minutes later at 64:08. The Eagles and the Pumas would battle back-and-fourth for the next 17 minutes before setting the stage for Potts' game-winning shot.
Overall in the match, USI had the advantage in shots, 12-8, and shots on-goal, 6-5. The teams were even, 5-5, in corner kicks.
USI starts its longest road trip of the season Friday when it travels to Lewis University for at 7:30 p.m. contest. The Eagles will be on the road for the next four matches, before return to Strassweg Field for a final two-game homestand, hosting host Truman State University and Quincy University October 25 and 27, respectively.
