USI hopes to clinch GLVC Tournament spot

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team hopes to clinch a spot in the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament this weekend when it comes home for its final regular season homestand of the 2013 season. USI (8-5-1, 6-5-1 GLVC) is hosting the top two teams in the league this weekend, taking on 23rd-ranked Truman State University (10-2-3, 9-1-2 GLVC) at 5 p.m. Friday and ninth-ranked Quincy University at noon Sunday.
 
The Screaming Eagles conclude the 2013 schedule on the road when they travel to Bellarmine University October 30 for a 2:55 p.m. (CDT).
 
WEEK 8 EAGLE NOTES:
 
A split in week 7 for USI: The Eagles split for the fifth week in a row, dropping a 4-1 decision to Maryville University and bouncing back to win a 3-2 victory at University of Missouri-St. Louis.
 
In the GLVC. USI is in a tie for sixth in the GLVC with William Jewell College, which lost to the Eagles in September. The Eagles have a full-game lead over Lewis University and the University of Indianapolis, which are tied for eighth, and trail by fifth-place Rockhurst University by game-and-half in the standings.
 
Offensive leaders. Sophomore Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio) leads the way for USI offensively with 12 points on four goals and four assist. She also has a team-best three game-winning. Freshman forward Natalie Geiger (Norwood, Ohio), who has become the offensive spark plug on the team, is second with 10 points on four goals and two assists. Geiger also has two game-winning goals.
 
Between the posts. USI goalkeeper Jackie Lohmann (Owensboro, Kentucky) ranks 10th in the GLVC with a 1.06 goals against average (GAA). She also has six shutouts this season, tying her mark as a freshman. Freshman goalkeeper Stacey DePriest (Fishers, Indiana) got the start and her first collegiate win in the victory at UMSL Sunday.
 
Eagles vs. Truman State: Truman State has controlled the all-time series with USI, 3-0-1. The tie between the two programs came in 1998 when the Bulldogs and Eagles battled to a 0-0 tie.
 
Truman State in the GLVC and overall. The Bulldogs are second in the GLVC, a game behind conference-leading Quincy.  Truman State is coming off a home-weekend split, losing 1-0 to Bellarmine University and defeating McKendree University, 4-1. The Bulldogs also rank second in the GLVC with a 0.40 team GAA.
 
Eagles vs. Quincy. Quincy holds the all-time series lead with USI, 10-6-1, after taking last year's meeting, 3-1, in Quincy, Illinois. The Hawks also have taken nine of the last 10 games with the Eagles.
 
Quincy in the GLVC. The Hawks, unbeaten through 15 matches in 2013, sit on top of the GLVC with a game lead over Truman State and have the league's top team GAA at 0.33. Individually, the Hawks' Jaclyn Mastroianni leads the GLVC with 24 points on eight goals and eight assists.
 
Eagles vs. Bellarmine. Bellarmine holds the all-time series lead with USI, 11-6-2, after taking a pair from the Eagles last year's. The Knights also have taken eight of the last 10 games with two ties. The Eagles and the Knights also have gone to overtime four times in the last 10 matches.
 
Bellarmine in the GLVC. The Knights are fourth in the GLVC and are fighting for a chance to host a first round match in the upcoming GLVC Tournament. Bellarmine, which hosts Maryville and UMSL this weekend, has won five-of-its-last-seven matches and ranks second in the league with 1.87 goals per game.
