Early offense gives Eagles a 3-2 win

ST. LOUIS, Mo.  – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team made three first half goals stand up as it posted a 3-2 win over  the University of Missouri-St. Louis Sunday afternoon in St. Louis, Missouri. USI sees its record rise to 8-5-1 overall and 6-5-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference, while UMSL falls to 4-9-1 overall, 2-9-1 in the conference.
 
The Screaming Eagles flew out in front from the start, taking a 1-0 lead at 1:13 when junior forward Katelan Carneal (Evansville, Indiana) converted on a penalty kick. The goal was Carneal's first of the season and her collegiate career.
 
USI increased the lead five minutes later when sophomore defender Emily Cummings (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded her first goal of the year to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage at 6:39. Cummings was assisted on the play by sophomore forward Madi Vellky (Dublin, Ohio).
 
The Tritons cut the Eagles' lead to 2-1 at 18:45 before USI junior defender Maura Hulme (Westerville, Ohio) re-extended the margin to two goals, 3-1, at 36:49. Hulme's goal was her first of the season.
 
Before the first half could conclude, the Triton sliced the Eagles lead in half for a second time with a tally at 41:26. USI would take the 3-2 lead into the intermission.
 
In the second half, the USI defense went to work. The Eagles limited the Tritons to five second half shots and only two on-goal. UMSL also did not get a shot on-goal until seven minutes were left in the game.
 
USI freshman goalkeeper Stacey DePriest (Fishers, Indiana) received the victory in her first collegiate start. DePriest allowed two goals and made five saves, while facing 16 shots.
 
The Eagles returns to Strassweg Field for a final two-game regular season homestand October 25 and October 27, hosting Truman State University and Quincy University, respectively. The match with Quincy on October 27 is Senior Day for the Eagles.
