EVANSVILLE, Ind.--- Three University of Southern Indiana volleyball players registered double-digit kills to lead the Screaming Eagles to a 25-17, 29-31, 25-8, 25-15 victory over McKendree University Saturday afternoon at the Physical Activities Center. Junior outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney (Appleton, Wisconsin) led the pack with 17, while junior outside hitter
Fawn Ryan (Batesville, Indiana) and sophomore middle blocker
Abbey Winter (Germantown, Illinois) contributed 12 and 11, respectively.
Winners of six straight, the Eagles improve to 16-4 overall and 9-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, moving into sole possession of second place in the East Division conference standings. The Bearcats fall to 5-15 (3-8 GLVC).
Senior setter
Jorae Bradbury (Decatur Indiana) was all over the court, totaling a match-high 47 assists. Senior libero
Kayla Heldman (Greenwood, Indiana) and right side hitter
Erica Oberbroeckling (Westfield, Indiana) came up with 17 and 14 digs to lead USI's defensive effort, though every Eagle on the court contributed at least one. At the net, Winter, Bradbury and freshman middle blocker
Amy Zwissler (Bloomington, Indiana) combined for 13 of USI's 18 block assists.
USI outhit the Bearcats .229 to .048 in the opening frame, cruising to a 25-17 win.
The Eagles picked up the first three points in the second set, but saw their lead fade as McKendree went on a 6-0 run to take an 8-7 lead. With a 20-15 advantage, USI needed only five more points to pick up a 2-0 lead, however McKendree shattered that dream, going on a 5-0 run, forcing the Eagles to call a timeout. A back-and-forth battle ensued as each team reached set point twice. Tied at 28-28, DeShaney slammed a kill down to put the Eagles ahead and hopefully end the set. USI could not keep the momentum going as McKendree answered back with three-straight kills, grabbing the game, 31-29.
Back from intermission, USI powered through the third set to take it 25-8, limiting the Bearcats to just four kills and a -.062 hitting percentage. Up 19-15 in set four, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run to end the game in their favor.
USI returns to action Friday when it competes at the Mizuno GLVC/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover in Aurora, Illinois. The Eagles, who find out who their opponents will be Sunday night, play once Friday and twice Saturday.
