EVANSVILLE, IN – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team kicks-off Great Lakes Valley Conference action on the road this week when it travels to 21
st-ranked Quincy University Friday and the University of Illinois Springfield Sunday. Game time Friday at Quincy is 7:30 p.m., while the start time Sunday at UIS is 2:30 p.m.
The Screaming Eagles are off to a 1-1-0 start after playing a pair of non-conference matches to begin the regular season. USI opened the year with a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Cedarville University, but bounced back to post a 4-1 victory over Oakland City University.
Junior midfielder
Miles Durham (Madisonville, Kentucky) led USI to the victory over Oakland City with a pair of goals, including the game-winning tally in the first half. The two-goal match was the first of Durham's USI career.
Senior midfielder/forward
Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana) scored the Eagles first goal of the year on a penalty kick, tying the score, 1-1, while senior midfielder
Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Illinois) capped off the scoring in the victory with a goal in the final seconds.
USI is hoping to start the 2012 GLVC campaign better than last fall when it lost the first seven matches. The Eagles ended 2011 GLVC schedule on an up-swing when it was 4-1-1 in the final six conference games.
Standing in the Eagles' way this week are the Hawks of Quincy and the Prairie Stars of UIS.
Quincy opened the 2012 campaign with a pair of wins last week that propelled it into the NSCAA Division II top 25 poll. The Hawk triumphs came at the expense of Truman State, 2-0, and Lindenwood University, 2-1.
USI trails in the all-times series with Quincy, 14-3-1, after the teams battled to a double-overtime, 1-1, tie last fall at Strassweg Field.
UIS began its fall schedule Sunday with a 2-1, overtime victory Sunday against Viterbro University. The Prairie Stars tied the match in the 76
th minute and won it in the 96
th minute of overtime.
The Stars, who open GLVC action against Kentucky Wesleyan College Friday evening, trail USI in the all-time series, 4-2-1, after falling to the Eagles last fall, 11-0, at Strassweg Field.
