INDIANAPOLIS—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team saw large leads slip away as No. 9 University of Indianapolis pinned a 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss on the Screaming Eagles Saturday afternoon.
USI (7-9, 5-2 GLVC) saw a four-point lead midway through the opening set fade away as the host Greyhounds used runs of 5-1 and 4-0 to surge in front and earn a six-point victory.
Despite holding a pair of five-point leads in the second set, a 10-0 UIndy spurt sent the Eagles to a seven-point loss in the second stanza. The Eagles trimmed an early five-point deficit to a single digit in the third set, but the Greyhounds responded with a 6-1 run that quelled the Eagles' comeback attempt and eventually led to a four-point victory.
USI struggled offensively throughout the match as the Greyhounds held USI to attacking percentages of negative .051 and negative .021 in the first two frames. The Eagles hit just .047 in the match, thanks to a .220 clip in the third game, while the Greyhounds hit .218.
Sophomore outside hitter
Lauren DeShaney paced USI with eight kills, while freshman middle blocker
Abbey Winter had five blocks. Freshman defensive specialist
Erin Goldschmidt had 16 digs in her first appearance as USI's libero.
Senior outside hitter Kristina Kerrigan, the reigning Division II AVCA National Player of the Week, had 15 kills to lead the Greyhounds (15-2, 7-0 GLVC), who have won 12 straight matches.
The Eagles return to action next Saturday at 5 p.m. when they host GLVC West Division foe Quincy University at the Physical Activities Center.
