EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Buoyed by a .355 attacking percentage, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team defeated league-newcomer McKendree University 25-18, 25-19, 25-19 in its Great Lakes Valley Conference opener Friday night at the Physical Activities Center.
USI (3-7, 1-0 GLVC) opened the match with blistering .395 attacking percentage to breeze to an eight-point win in the first set; then exploded to the tune of a .529 attacking clip in the second set to build a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Screaming Eagles, winners of three straight matches, used a 6-0 spurt to overcome a sluggish start to the third set and close the contest in three games.

Lauren DeShaney slammed down seven of her match-high 13 kills in the second stanza as she finished the contest with a .375 attacking percentage and three blocks. Fellow classmate
Fawn Ryan added 12 kills, while junior middle blocker
Emily Diedrich had 10 kills, a .625 attacking percentage, and three blocks.

USI returns to action Saturday at 3 p.m. when it takes on Bellarmine University at the PAC. The Knights (4-1, 1-0 GLVC) defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College in four sets Friday night in Owensboro, Kentucky.
