Eagles hold off Cedarville in four sets

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team overcame a late four-point deficit in the fourth set to hold off visiting Cedarville University 25-20, 25-10, 22-25, 30-28 in its home-opener Tuesday evening at the Physical Activities Center.

Sophomore outside hitter Fawn Ryan had three of her team-leading 15 kills in an 8-3 run that saw the Screaming Eagles turn a 21-17 deficit into a 25-24 lead and the first of four match-point opportunities.

Ryan, who had six kills in the closing set, finished the match with a .464 attacking percentage and three blocks after posting a .600 clip in the fourth frame.

USI (2-7) dominated the first two sets, compiling attacking clips of .406 and .462, respectively, as it cruised to a two-set lead in the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Lauren DeShaney racked up seven of her 14 kills in the opening frame, while Ryan and freshman middle blocker Abbey Winter had five and four kills, respectively, in the second stanza.

Following the intermission, Cedarville (9-1) jumped out to a commanding 18-11 lead in the third set before holding off a late USI charge to earn a three-point win and cut USI's lead in half.

In addition to Ryan and DeShaney, the Eagles got 10 kills and four blocks from junior middle blocker Emily Diedrich as well as nine kills and a match-high six blocks from Winter.

Junior setter Jorae Bradbury added 51 assists and seven kills, while junior libero Kayla Heldman chipped in 21 digs. Freshman right side hitter Erica Oberbroeckling contributed 13 digs, four service aces, and six kills to the Eagles' cause.

USI opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play Friday 7 p.m. when it hosts McKendree University at the PAC.
