WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—Despite rallying twice in its opener Saturday morning, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team walked away from The Hyatt Place Sunshine Classic in search of its first win of the season after suffering a five-set loss to tournament host Palm Beach Atlantic University and a three-set loss to Barry University.
The Screaming Eagles (0-4) battled back from a pair of one-set deficits in their first match, but Palm Beach Atlantic used a 7-1 start in the fifth frame to claim the deciding set and a 25-22, 21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-5 win.
Junior middle blocker
Emily Diedrich led the Eagles with 13 kills and a blistering .722 attacking percentage, while junior libero
Kayla Heldman had 18 digs.
After seeing the Sailfish post attacking percentages of .310 and .514 in the first and third frames, respectively, the Eagles rallied with 13 kills and a .345 attacking clip in the fourth frame. Palm Beach Atlantic, however, racked up 11 kills and a .308 attacking percentage in the fifth game while holding the Eagles to just one kill and a .000 hitting clip.
USI started the opening set against Barry in promising fashion as it jumped out to an 11-6 advantage. The Buccaneers, however, stormed back, on the strength of an 8-1 surge, to take a two-point advantage.
Barry used a 3-0 spurt later in the frame to break a 19-19 stalemate and pull out a 25-21 victory in the opener.
The Eagles rallied from deficits of 11-6 and 20-14 to pull even with the Buccaneers in the second set, but Barry won four of the final five points to steal the second frame, 25-22, and build a 2-0 lead in the match. Barry used a 6-0 run midway through the third stanza to break a 10-10 tie and secure the three-set victory with a 25-16 win.
Senior outside hitter
Abbi Williams paced the Eagles with seven kills, while sophomore middle blocker
Ashley Rakers added five kills and a .417 attacking percentage.
USI returns to action Friday at noon when it takes on No. 6 Southwest Minnesota State University in its first match of the “Middle of Everywhere” Classic in Rolla, Missouri.
