INDIANAPOLIS—The University of Southern Indiana softball team stopped an eight-game losing streak by putting an end to the nation's longest winning streak Saturday afternoon.
After falling, 8-0, in five innings in the opener, the Screaming Eagles held off a late rally to post an 8-6 win over the University of Indianapolis in the nightcap of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader. USI's victory snapped the No. 2 Greyhounds' 33-game winning streak.
Trailing 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth inning of game two, the Eagles got an RBI-single from junior shortstop/pitcher
Stephanie Bittner to cut UIndy's lead in half. Following an error to extend the Eagles' offensive turn in the sixth, freshman catcher MacKenzie Dorsam hit a two-run double into the gap in right-centerfield to give USI a 4-3 advantage.
USI (21-17, 12-12 GLVC) tacked on four crucial runs in the seventh frame as freshman first baseman
Elizabeth Prince followed Bittner's two-run double with a two-run single to stake the Eagles to a commanding 8-3 advantage.
UIndy (37-2, 23-1 GLVC), which committed six errors in the contest, rallied in the last half of the seventh inning as it scored three times before bringing the winning run to the plate. Freshman pitcher
Brooke Harmening, however, struck out UIndy second baseman Sydney Russell for the final out of the game as the Eagles picked up the critical victory.
Harmening (12-10), who hit a solo home run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1, earned the victory after giving up six runs, five earned, off nine hits in seven innings of work.
In game one, UIndy scored six times in the home half of the first inning to take a 6-0 lead. The Greyhounds racked up four hits and capitalized on three walks in the opening frame as they took a commanding lead.
The Eagles, who had just one hit in game one, surrendered two more runs in the fourth inning and could not get any offense going in the fifth frame as they lost via the eight-run rule.
Bittner (0-2) took the loss in game one after surrendering six runs off four hits in an inning of work.
USI returns to action Tuesday at 5 p.m. when it hosts Oakland City University in a Midwest Region doubleheader at the USI Softball Field.
