RENSSELAER, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team lost both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader to host Saint Joseph's College Friday afternoon. The Screaming Eagles lost the first game, 5-2, before losing the second contest, 12-3, in five innings.

In game one, Saint Joseph's (24-12, 15-7 GLVC) broke a scoreless tie in the home half of the third inning as scored four times to build a 4-0 advantage.

USI (20-16, 11-11 GLVC) cut the deficit in half in the top of the sixth inning as junior shortstop/pitcher Stephanie Bittner and senior designated player Kristen O'Haver led the frame off with back-to-back home runs. The Eagles had two more hits in the inning but could not push another run across the plate.

Saint Joseph's added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning and retired the Eagles in order in the seventh to earn its third straight win over the Eagles.

Freshman pitcher Brooke Harmening (11-10) was charged with the loss after giving up five runs off seven hits in six innings of action. Harmening struck out three batters while issuing four walks.

In game two, the Eagles found themselves playing catch-up as Saint Joseph's scored twice in the bottom of the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead. The Pumas scored five times in the second inning to increase their lead to 7-0.

The Eagles chipped into Saint Joseph's lead with three runs in the third inning. Sophomore centerfielder Teri Newmaster had an RBI when she grounded into a fielder's choice, while freshman first baseman Elizabeth Prince had a two-run single later in the frame.

Saint Joseph's, however, ended any hope of an Eagles' comeback in the home half of the fourth inning as it tacked on five more runs to win via the eight-run rule.

Freshman pitcher Kelsey Jankowski (5-2) was charged with the loss after surrendering seven runs off four hits in one-and-a-third innings of work.

USI, which has lost seven straight games, returns to action Saturday at 11 a.m. (CDT) when it travels to Indianapolis to take on No. 2 University of Indianapolis in a GLVC doubleheader.
