STANFORD, Calif.—University of Southern Indiana men's track and field senior
Dustin Emerick broke his own school-record in the 10,000 meters at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational Sunday night at Stanford University.
Emerick finished 19th in his section with an NCAA Division II automatic qualifying and USA Olympic Trials provisional qualifying time of 28 minutes, 33.35 seconds. His time ranks him second in Division II in 2012 and eighth all-time.
A year ago at the Mt. SAC Relays, Emerick broke USI and GLVC Hall of Fame member Elly Rono's 13-year old school record in the 10,000 meters when he crossed the finish line in 28 minutes, 41.62 seconds.
Emerick, the Old National Bank/USI Male Student-Athlete of the Year, earned All-America honors in the 10,000 meters a year ago and was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Midwest Region Track Athlete of the Year last spring.
In addition to the 10,000 meters, Emerick ranks seventh in the 5,000 meters after posting a provisional qualifying time of 14 minutes, 4.34 seconds at the Stanford Invitational earlier this season.
As a team, the Screaming Eagles have three student-athletes ranked in the top 15, nationally, of four events. Juniors
Michael Jordan and
Michael Callison are seventh and 11th, respectively, in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
USI returns to action Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championships in Rensselaer, Indiana. The NCAA II Outdoor Championships are 24-26 in Pueblo, Colorado.
