EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team saw its 2012 season came to a close Sunday as visiting Lewis University swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader from the Screaming Eagles Sunday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. Lewis rallied for an 11-4 victory in the opener before taking the second game, 10-6.
In the opener, the Eagles (27-21, 16-16 GLVC) trailed 3-1 when senior designated player/third baseman
Kristen O'Haver hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3. Freshman pitcher
Brooke Harmening followed with a solo home run to give the Eagles a 4-3 advantage.
Lewis (29-22, 21-15 GLVC), however, had four hits and scored four times in the sixth inning to stop USI's momentum and take a 7-4 lead. The Flyers added four runs on five hits in the seventh frame to win the contest and take away any chance the Eagles had at advancing to the GLVC Tournament.
Earlier in the contest, USI took a 1-0 lead when sophomore leftfielder
Kyla Gogel hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to push across the contest's first tally. Lewis, however, plated three runners in the third inning to take the 3-1 advantage.
Harmening (16-13) was charged with the loss in the opener after surrendering seven runs, three earned, off 10 hits in six innings of work. O'Haver, who was intentionally walked four times in game two, led USI at the plate in game one as she went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, and two RBIs. She was honored at the conclusion of game two as part of USI's Senior Day festivities.
In game two, the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead as freshman catcher MacKenzie Dorsom had an RBI-single and freshman leftfielder
Breanne Lahart had a bases-loaded walk.
The Flyers, however, scored a run in the second inning and four runs in the third to build a 5-2 advantage.
USI closed the gap in the fourth inning as freshman first baseman
Elizabeth Prince had an RBI-double before Dorsam hit a sacrifice fly to cut Lewis' advantage to a single tally.
Lewis, however, racked up five hits and scored four times in the fifth frame to end the Eagles' rally and take a commanding 9-4 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, USI scored a run on an error and got an RBI-single from Prince, who was 3-of-5 with two RBIs in the nightcap, to cut Lewis's cushion to 9-6; but that was as close as the Eagles would get as the Flyers added another tally in the seventh inning to complete the two-game sweep.
Junior shortstop/pitcher
Stephanie Bittner took the loss for the Eagles in game two after giving up nine runs, five earned, off 11 hits in four-and-a-third innings of work. She fell to 0-3 with the decision.
