LOUISVILLE, Ky.—After suffering a 1-0, 11-inning setback in the opening game of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Sunday, the University of Southern Indiana softball team rebounded to slam host Bellarmine University, 8-0, in the second game and salvage a split on the day.

USI (24-18, 13-13 GLVC) scored three times in the top of the second inning and five times in the seventh frame to defeat the Knights and salvage a split of the four-game season-series.

In the second inning, the Screaming Eagles got RBIs from sophomore leftfielder Kyla Gogel, junior rightfielder Katherine Belsito, and sophomore centerfielder Teri Newmaster.

USI capitalized on a pair of errors in the seventh inning and got a grand slam from sophomore hurler Kelsey Jankowski to put the exclamation point on the victory. Freshman catcher MacKenzi Dorsam also had an RBI in the inning as the Eagles took a commanding 8-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh frame.

Jankowski (7-2) rolled through the Knights' lineup to record her third complete-game shutout of the year. She allowed just five hits and two walks while fanning a career-high seven batters.

Game one, which was highlighted by the Eagles turning a triple play in the last half of the sixth inning, saw USI strand 11 runners on base, including a pair of runners in scoring position in the ninth and 10th innings.

The Eagles had nine hits in the contest, but could not give any run support to freshman hurler Brooke Harmening, who was charged with the loss after giving up four straight singles in the 11th inning. Harmening (13-11) took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and finished the contest by giving up seven hits as she suffered an 11-inning loss for the second time this season.

USI returns to action Wednesday at 1 p.m. when it travels to Owensboro, Kentucky, to take on Kentucky Wesleyan College in a GLVC doubleheader. The Screaming Eagles host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside next Saturday and Lewis University next Sunday to conclude the regular-season.
