EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Minnesota State University-Mankato Wednesday morning to conclude the Division II Rebel Spring Games with a 5-2 victory over Seton Hill University.
USI (9-5) got an RBI-single from sophomore outfielder
Kyla Gogel in the bottom of the second inning and a two-run home run from junior shortstop
Stephanie Bittner to in the last part of the third frame to forge an early 3-0 lead.
The Screaming Eagles increased their lead to 5-1 with a pair of tallies in the fifth inning as senior third baseman/designated player
Kristen O'Haver had an RBI-single before Bittner scored on a passed ball to stake USI to the four-run advantage.
Sophomore pitcher
Madeline Brink (2-1), who matched a career-high with six strikeouts, earned the win after giving up two runs, one earned, off seven hits.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles' offense struggled to get anything going in their 1-0 loss to Minnesota State-Mankato. USI, which had scoring opportunities in the first and seventh innings slip away as it stranded runners at third base in each stanza, was limited to just two hits and four base runners.
The Mavericks (12-4) got a leadoff home run from catcher Lindsay Erickson in the bottom of the sixth inning to record the game's only tally.
Freshman pitcher
Brooke Harmening was charged with the loss despite giving up just one run off four hits in six innings of work. Harmening (5-4) struck out six batters and issued just one walk as she suffered her third straight setback.
The Eagles return to action Saturday at noon when they resume Great Lakes Valley Conference play by hosting Missouri University of Science & Technology in a doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. Missouri S&T (5-10 overall, 4-0 GLVC) is tied with Drury University (13-4 overall, 4-0 GLVC), USI's opponent Sunday, for first-place in the GLVC West Division.
