KISSIMMEE, Fla.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team erupted for a season-high run total in its 11-1, five-inning shellacking of Fayetteville State University Tuesday morning at the Division II Rebel Spring Games; but its offensive outburst was limited to its first game of the day as the Screaming Eagles fell to Concordia University-St. Paul, 1-0, in its final game of the day.
In their opener, the Eagles (8-4) got a two-run double from senior third baseman/designated player
Kristen O'Haver in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Freshman catcher
MacKenzi Dorsam followed three batters later with a three-run double to stake USI to a commanding 5-0 lead.
O'Haver, who was 2-of-3 with a career-high five RBIs against Fayetteville State (0-18), had a three-run home run in the next inning as the Eagles increased their cushion to 8-0.
USI took advantage of several Broncos' errors in the third and fourth frames to push across three more tallies and cruise to the 11-1 victory.
Sophomore pitcher
Kelsey Jankowski (2-0) earned the victory, giving up just one unearned run off two hits to pick up the complete-game victory.
The Eagles, who had 11 hits in their first game, saw their offense come to a grinding halt in their 1-0 loss to Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears (10-4) held the Eagles to just two hits and six base runners to defeat USI for the second time in three days.
Concordia-St. Paul (10-4) capitalized on a leadoff double when shortstop Brynn Larsen singled in the bottom of the third inning to push across the game's only run.
USI had a pair of golden opportunities to score in the third and fifth innings, but a line-drive double-play off the bat of sophomore centerfielder
Teri Newmaster took the Eagles out of a “first-and-second with nobody out” situation in the third frame.
A one-out double by sophomore outfielder
Kyla Gogel in the fifth inning had the Eagles in prime position to get on the board. USI, however, could not push the run across the plate as Gogel was tagged out at home following Newmaster's bunt two batters later.
Freshman hurler
Brooke Harmening (5-3) was pinned with the loss after giving up one run off six hits in six innings of work.
USI concludes the Rebel Spring Games Wednesday when its takes on Minnesota State University-Mankato and Seton Hill University at 8 a.m. (CST) and noon, respectively.
