KISSIMMEE, Fla.—Senior third baseman
Kristen O'Haver had a two-run, walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the University of Southern Indiana softball team to a 3-2 victory over the University of the Sciences in its second game of the Division II Rebel Spring Games Sunday. USI saw a 2-0 lead slip away in its first game of the day as it fell to Concordia University-St. Paul, 5-3.
After spotting the Devils (0-3) a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning, the Screaming Eagles scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 2-0 deficit and earn their first win of the Rebel Spring Games.
USI (7-3), which had left 12 runners on base in the first six innings, had three straight singles to begin the seventh frame, including an RBI-single by junior shortstop
Stephanie Bittner.
O'Haver, who was 3-for-4 in the game with two doubles, followed Bittner's single with the game-winning double to leftfield.
Sophomore hurler
Kelsey Jankowski (1-0) picked up the win after entering the pitcher's circle in the top of the seventh inning. Fellow classmate
Madeline Brink threw six solid innings, but slowed down a bit in the fifth and sixth innings before giving way to Jankowski.
Earlier in the day, the Eagles took advantage of an error in the top of the second inning to forge a 1-0 lead over Concordia-St. Paul. Freshman first baseman
Elizabeth Prince had an RBI-single in the fourth inning as USI increased its advantage to 2-0.
Concordia-St. Paul (6-4), however, took advantage of a pair of USI errors in the bottom of the fourth inning to score three times and take a 3-2 lead. The Golden Bears tacked on two more tallies in the fifth inning to increase their cushion to three runs.
Freshman catcher
MacKenzi Dorsam, who scored USI's first two runs, had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to cut the Eagles' deficit to 5-3; but that was as close as the Eagles would get as they went down in order in the top of the seventh frame.
Freshman pitcher
Brooke Harmening (5-2), who struck out seven batters, was charged with the loss after giving up five runs, two earned, off eight hits in six innings of work.
USI resumes the Rebel Spring Games Tuesday when it takes on Fayetteville State University at 8 a.m. (CST) and Concordia-St. Paul at 10 a.m.
