EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana softball team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat visiting Bellarmine University, 3-1, in the second game of the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the USI Softball Field. USI lost the first game, 4-0.
After surrendering a tally in the top of the first inning of game two, sophomore hurler
Madeline Brink held the Knights in check throughout the final six innings to give the Screaming Eagles an opportunity.
USI (16-6, 9-1 GLVC) responded in the home half of the second inning as senior third baseman/designated player
Kristen O'Haver, who had a lead-off double to start the frame, scored on a two-out, RBI-single by sophomore catcher
Lauren Hatfield.
The Eagles took their first lead of the day on O'Haver's sacrifice fly in the third inning and increased their advantage to two runs in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by freshman first baseman
Elizabeth Prince.
Brink (4-1) earned the victory after scattering six hits and three walks throughout seven innings. She entered the day with the GLVC's top ERA (0.86).
Bellarmine (16-12, 7-3 GLVC) began the day with a run in the top of the first inning to build an early lead in game one. The Knights tacked on three more tallies in the second frame and never looked back as freshman pitcher Alicia Miller surrendered just two hits to pick up the complete-game shutout.
Freshman pitcher
Brooke Harmening took the loss for the Eagles after giving up four runs off eight hits and an uncharacteristic five walks in six innings of work. Harmening fell to 8-5 with the setback.
USI returns to action Sunday at noon when it hosts East Division foe Northern Kentucky University in a GLVC doubleheader at the USI Softball Field. The Norse (12-8, 6-4 GLVC) split a conference twinbill with Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday in Owensboro, Kentucky.
