INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The eighth-ranked University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team could not hold a 16-point lead as the University of Indianapolis comes from behind to win 65-59 Saturday evening in Indianapolis, Indiana. USI falls to 17-4 overall and 9-4 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 16-5, 9-4 GLVC.
With the loss, the Screaming Eagles fall from a tie for second in the GLVC East Division to a three-way tie for third. USI is three-games behind GLVC East Division leading Bellarmine University; and a game behind second place Kentucky Wesleyan College. USI, UIndy, and Northern Kentucky University are tied for third with 9-4 conference marks.
The Greyhounds will hold the tie-breakers over the Eagles after completing the season sweep for the first time since 1978-79.
The game started slowly for the Eagles and the Greyhounds with both teams struggling to hit shots. Both teams combined for just 25 points through the first 12:30 of the contest.
After starting the game by shooting 26.1 percent from the field (6-22), USI caught fire in the final seven minutes of the opening half. The Eagles went on a 21-6 run to end the half, shooting 72.7 percent (8-11), and built a 14-point lead by the intermission, 32-18.
USI also did the job defensively during the first 20 minutes, holding UIndy to 20.6 percent from the field (6-29) and blocked five shots.
In the second half, it was the Greyhounds' turn to catch fire. They eliminated the Eagles' halftime lead by hitting their first nine shots and shooting 76.2 percent (16-21) from the field in the final 20 minutes. UIndy used a run of 36-18 in the final 13 minutes to get the 65-59 victory.
Individually, USI was led by senior guard
Brandon Hogg (Edwardsville, Illinois) with 20 points. Senior forward
Isaac McClure (Paducah, Kentucky) followed with 13 points.
USI returns to the friendly surroundings of the Physical Activities Center and Homecoming next week. The Eagles start the final three-game homestand of the regular season when they host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Lewis University Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
