The Screaming Eagles have a familiar quarterfinal foe waiting for them in the fourth-seeded University of Indianapolis. The third USI-UIndy match-up of the year is the fourth game of Friday's quarterfinals and is scheduled for an 8:30 p.m. tip-off.
The Greyhounds took the two regular season meetings from the Eagles, winning 59-56 at the PAC in January and 65-59 in Indianapolis this month.
USI started slow in its first round win over Maryville, leading at the intermission, 23-16. The Eagles' defense picked up the offense, holding the Saints to 28.6 percent from the field (6-21) and did not allow them to reach double-digits until 3:55 to play in the opening half.
In the second half, the Saints got the jump on the Eagles offensively and used a 14-7 run to tie the game, 30-30, with 14:26 remaining. Maryville continued to roll all the way to leads of 36-33 and 38-35 before USI got its offense back on track.
Trailing 38-35, the Eagles got a break when a charging call on senior guard
Brandon Hogg (Edwardsville, Illinois) was reversed into a lay-up and a free throw to tie the game, 38-38. That old-fashion three-point play started a 15-0 run for USI as the Eagles took control of the game for good.
The Eagles rolled over the Saints in the next nine minutes, outscoring them 26-3, and finished the game on a 20-point run, 33-13. Senior forward
Isaac McClure (Paducah, Kentucky) led USI during the 26-3 run with 10 points, while freshman
Austin Davis (Freeport, Illinois) dropped in eight-straight points midway through the run.
After pushing the lead to as many as 20 points twice, USI cruised the final minutes to the 68-51 final. The Eagles outrebounded the Saints, 42-22, overall and held them to 39.1 percent from the field (18-46).
USI was led in the scoring column by Hogg, who dropped in 11 of his 20 points during the second half. McClure followed with 19 points, 15 coming in the final 20 minutes, and recorded his fourth double-double of the year by grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.
McClure also blocked a game-high three shots, while sophomore guard
Lawrence Thomas made a game-best three steals.
