USI Game Notes;
EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's basketball team hosts the sixth-annual Bill Joergens Memorial Classic Friday and Saturday at the Physical Activities Center. The classic, in addition to USI, includes fifth-ranked Bellarmine University, the University of Virginia at Wise, and Philander Smith College.
Game times for both evenings are 5:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. USI is slated to play the 7:30 p.m. contest each night.
Coverage for the classic, including live stats and audio/video broadcasts, is available at gousieagles.com. The USI games also can be heard on ESPN 106.7FM and WPSR 90.7FM.
The Screaming Eagles (2-0), who are ninth in the first regular season poll of the year, are off to a good start after posting wins each of the last two weekends. USI notched its second win after surviving a scare from Midwest region-foe Urbana University, 54-53.
USI junior forward
Taylor Wischmeier (Brownstown, Indiana) recorded his second-straight double-figure contest, leading the Eagles with 15 points and eight rebounds. Wischmeier is USI's top scorer through two games, averaging 17.5 points and six rebounds per game.
The Bellarmine Knights (2-0), which joins USI in making their sixth appearance in the classic, have been perfect to start the year with two wins over squads from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Knights defeated Wayne State University, 79-65, and Grand Valley State University, 64-57, at Knights Hall last week.
Bellarmine started the year ranked fourth in the NABC/Division II Preseason and are the defending NCAA Division II Midwest Regional champion. The Knights have advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight each of the last two seasons, winning the national title in 2011.
USI's first opponent in the 2012 classic is UVA-Wise. The Cavaliers (3-3) will be a quarter of the way through the regular season by time they play the Eagles Friday night. UVA-Wise has split its first six contests of the year and plays at the University of Pikeville Tuesday night before coming to the PAC.
The Eagles conclude the Bill Joergens Memorial Classic Saturday when they host Philander Smith. The Panthers (4-2) come to Evansville on a three-game winning streak after starting the year 1-2.
The contests Friday and Saturday will be the first meetings between USI, UV-Wise, and Philander Smith.
