EVANSVILLE, Ind.—Junior defensive specialist
Kayla Heldman recorded her 1,000th career dig Saturday evening as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team blasted visiting Quincy University 25-20, 25-19, 25-16 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference bout at the Physical Activities Center.
Heldman, who became the ninth player in school history to record 1,000 digs, reached the milestone late in the third set on an attack by Quincy's Taylor Jacobs. Heldman, who had 990 digs entering the match, finished with 10 as the Screaming Eagles held the Hawks to a .079 attacking percentage.
USI (8-9, 6-2 GLVC) set the tone early in the match as it raced out to an 8-0 lead in the opening frame. The Hawks (8-6, 3-5 GLVC) battled back, trimming USI's lead to just two late in the frame, but a pair of kills by sophomore outside hitter
Fawn Ryan helped the Eagles hold Quincy at bay and earn the five-point win.
Ryan's seven kills in the second set helped the Eagles to a six-point win. USI used a pair of 6-1 runs to pull away from the Hawks and build a two-game cushion in the match.
Another quick start in the third set allowed the Eagles to jump out to a 9-2 lead as they cruised to their fifth victory in as many outings at the PAC.
Ryan, who hit .364 in the match, led USI with 15 kills and eight blocks, while junior middle blocker
Emily Diedrich finished with 12 kills, a .750 attacking percentage, and four blocks. Diedrich had 10 kills in just 12 swings entering the final game.
Freshman libero
Erin Goldschmidt aided the Eagles with a match-high 14 digs, while junior setter
Jorae Bradbury had a match-high 29 assists despite not playing half of the third frame.
The Eagles return to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when they take on the University of Illinois Springfield at the PAC. The Prairie Stars (4-11, 1-7 GLVC) lost to Kentucky Wesleyan College in four sets Saturday evening in Owensboro, Kentucky.
