OWENSBORO, Ky.—Freshman middle blocker Abbey Winter had a team-high 10 kills and six blocks as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team recorded a 25-22, 25-20, 25-21 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over host Kentucky Wesleyan College Tuesday night.

USI (14-13, 10-4 GLVC) trailed by two late in the opening frame, but a 5-1 run helped the Screaming Eagles sneak past the Panthers (10-18, 3-11 GLVC) to earn a one-set lead in the match.

The Eagles used runs of 5-0 and 8-0 to build a 17-10 advantage in the second frame; but a 9-3 Kentucky Wesleyan outburst trimmed the Eagles' advantage to a single point. USI, however, capitalized on a Kentucky Wesleyan service error and attacking error to stop the run and pull out a five-point win.

USI, which held the Panthers to a .026 attacking percentage in the third set, led 24-17 in game three before the Panthers put together a 4-0 run to get to within three points. Sophomore outside hitter Lauren DeShaney, though, hammered down a kill to close the door on the Panthers' comeback and give the Eagles the three-set victory.

In addition to Winter, who hit .350, the Eagles got strong outings from junior setter Jorae Bradbury and senior outside hitter Abbi Williams. Bradbury finished with five kills, 24 assists, 10 digs, and a .444 attacking percentage, while Williams added seven kills, three blocks, and a .333 attacking percentage.

Junior libero Kayla Heldman moved into sixth-place all-time at USI in career digs (1,156) after recording a match-high 16 against the Panthers. USI held the Panthers to a .098 attacking percentage for the match.

The Eagles, who moved into a tie for third-place in the GLVC East Division due to Bellarmine University's four-set loss to McKendree University Tuesday night, return to action Friday at 6 p.m. (CDT) when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on Bellarmine. USI concludes its 2012 road slate Saturday at 3 p.m. when it travels to Lebanon, Illinois, to take on McKendree.
