EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team returns to the Physical Activities Center this Saturday and Sunday to take on Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division foes Quincy University and the University of Illinois Springfield in the first of four GLVC intra-division contests this year.
Saturday's match with Quincy begins at 5 p.m., while Sunday's duel with Illinois Springfield is set to begin at 1 p.m. Live stats and video for both matches are available at gousieagles.com.
USI (7-9, 5-2 GLVC) is looking to bounce back from a tough three-set loss to No. 9 University of Indianapolis this past Saturday. The Screaming Eagles held large leads in both the first and second sets, but could not keep the East Division-leading Greyhounds from rallying in both frames.
Despite the loss, the Eagles have won seven of their last nine matches and are currently third in the GLVC East Division standings and fifth overall. This weekend's contests are vital for the Eagles to gain momentum as they head into the GLVC/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover, which is October 12-13 in Aurora, Illinois, as USI can improve on its positioning with a pair of wins and some help.
Individually, junior defensive specialist/libero
Kayla Heldman has the opportunity to become the ninth player in school history to reach 1,000 career digs. She is currently ninth all-time at USI with 990.
Quincy (8-5, 3-4 GLVC) enters the PAC coming off a three-set victory over William Jewell College. The Lady Hawks suffered a tough three-match skid prior to the win and had lost five of the last seven matches after opening the year with a 5-0 record.
Illinois Springfield (3-10, 1-6 GLVC), which hosts Eureka College Wednesday night before opening the GLVC weekend at Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday, enters the week having lost five straight matches and nine of the last 10.
USI concludes its four-match slate with the GLVC West Division October 20-21 with matches at the University of Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville University.
