ST. LOUIS—Sophomore outside hitters
Fawn Ryan and
Lauren DeShaney each had 11 kills as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rallied from a one-set deficit to defeat Maryville University 21-25, 25-16, 25-13, 25-15 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match Sunday afternoon.
USI (12-12, 8-3 GLVC) could not get any type of momentum going in the opening frame, but an early 7-1 run in set two helped the Screaming Eagles find a rhythm.
Ryan, who continues to fill in as a middle blocker due to an injury to junior middle blocker
Emily Diedrich, racked up four kills and a pair of blocks in the second set as USI posted a nine-point win to even the match at a game apiece. Ryan finished the match with a blistering .391 attacking percentage and four blocks.
DeShaney, who was held to just two kills and a .000 attacking percentage in 18 swings during the first two sets, erupted for nine kills and a .692 attacking percentage in just 13 attempts in games three and four as the Eagles cruised to 12 and 10-point wins, respectively, to complete their comeback.
In addition to DeShaney and Ryan, the Eagles got nine kills and six blocks from freshman middle blocker
Abbey Winter as well as 27 assists and four blocks from junior setter
Jorae Bradbury. Junior libero
Kayla Heldman and freshman defensive specialist
Erin Goldschmidt contributed 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
USI resumes the second half of its GLVC East Division slate Friday at 7 p.m. when it hosts No. 10 University of Indianapolis in its “Dig for the Cure” match at the Physical Activities Center.
