ST. LOUIS—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rallied from a two-set deficit, but a late 3-0 surge in the deciding frame allowed the University of Missouri-St. Louis to escape with a 25-15, 25-16, 23-25, 16-25, 15-12 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Screaming Eagles Saturday evening.
After seeing the host Tritons (9-13, 6-4) rack up a combined 29 kills and a .418 attacking percentage in sets one and two, the Eagles held Missouri-St. Louis to a .081 attacking percentage in game three and a negative .029 attacking in game four to tie the match.
USI (11-12, 7-3 GLVC), meanwhile, racked up a combined 25 kills and a .304 attacking percentage in the third and fourth sets to force a deciding frame.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fifth set, but Missouri-St. Louis won six of the next eight rallies to forge a brief 6-5 lead.
USI battled back to take a 10-8 lead, but a 4-1 Missouri-St. Louis run allowed the Tritons to build a late one-point advantage. The Eagles tied the fifth game at 12-12 after a timeout, but the Tritons followed a USI attacking error with back-to-back kills to end USI's comeback attempt.

Lauren DeShaney led the Eagles with 17 kills, while freshman middle blocker
Abbey Winter had 13 kills, a .417 attacking percentage, and four blocks.

Kayla Heldman and freshman defensive specialist
Erin Goldschmidt added 20 and 13 digs, respectively, while senior setter
Ashley King came off the bench to finish with a team-best 27 assists. Sophomore outside hitter
Fawn Ryan, who is filling in as a middle blocker, finished with a team-high six blocks.
USI returns to action Sunday at 1 p.m. when it visits Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri.
