AURORA, Ill.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team rallied from large deficits in both the first and second sets to earn a hard-fought 26-24, 25-23, 25-17 victory over Northern Michigan University Friday morning in the opening round of the Mizuno Great Lakes Valley Conference/Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover.

USI (10-9), which overcame a five-point deficit in the opening stanza, won the final five points of game one to earn a two-point victory. The Screaming Eagles trailed 21-15 in the second set, but a 10-2 rally to conclude the frame gave USI a another two-point win and a two-set cushion heading into the final stanza.

The Eagles, who have won 10 of their last 12 matches, slammed the door on the Wildcats in the third game as they used a pair of 5-0 runs to break a 12-12 tie and earn an eight-point win.

Junior middle blocker Emily Diedrich and sophomore outside hitter Lauren DeShaney each had 10 kills to lead the Eagles, who hit .236 for the match. Diedrich also had a match-high five blocks, while DeShaney had three blocks and a .381 attacking percentage.

Freshman middle blocker Abbey Winter also had eight kills and a .500 attacking percentage, while junior setter Jorae Bradbury had 31 assists and nine digs. Junior libero Kayla Heldman racked up 18 digs to aid USI, which held the Wildcats to a .172 attacking percentage.

USI, which avenged a five-set loss it suffered at the hands of Northern Michigan earlier this season, returns to action later this evening when it takes on Wayne State University at 5:30 p.m.
