EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team lost a wild shootout with the University of Indianapolis, 3-2, Friday night at Strassweg Field. USI falls to 1-8-0 overall and 0-7-0 in the GLVC, while UIndy goes to 7-2-0, 6-1-0 GLVC.
The Screaming Eagles struck first in the opening 45 minutes when junior forward
Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Illinois) scored at 13:21 off an assist from freshman forward
Brock Gourley (Evansville, Indiana). The goal was Andrekus' first of the season.
UIndy responded at 24:35, tying the score, 1-1, and took the lead, 2-1, at less than two minutes later at 26:05. The Greyhounds would take that lead into the intermission.
Early in the second half, UIndy upped the margin to 3-1 and appeared to be cruising before USI rebounded to cut the deficit to 3-2. USI freshman forward
James Kennedy (Waterford, Michigan) knocked in an errant clear by the UIndy defense for the Eagles second goal. The tally was Kennedy's first of the year and his first at USI.
The Eagles continued to battle but were unable to find the back of the goal again. USI junior midfielder
Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana) had two shots at the goal in the final five minutes only to see one shot saved by UIndy goalkeeper Justin Roberts and a header go high over the goal.
The Eagles finish the short two-match homestand Sunday at 2:30 p.m. when they host Saint Joseph's College. SJC raised its record to 4-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the GLVC with a 4-3 overtime win at Kentucky Wesleyan College.
