BIG RAPIDS, Mich.—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team settled for a split on the final day of the Ferris State University Invitational Saturday. USI defeated Upper Iowa University 25-14, 25-20, 26-24 to begin the day, but suffered a tough 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 setback to Midwest Region foe Ferris State.
Against Upper Iowa (2-1), the Screaming Eagles used a dominate effort in the opening set to gain momentum in the match. USI used a .367 attacking percentage and a 9-0 run in the opening frame to earn the 11-point victory. 
The Eagles (2-2) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second game, but had to rally back later in the frame to earn a two-set advantage in the match. USI trailed 16-14 midway through the set, but used an 11-4 run to end the stanza and pick up the game-two win.
USI battled back from deficits of 12-8 and 21-18 in the third set to edge Upper Iowa and complete the sweep.
Senior middle blocker 
Danielle LaGrange and sophomore outside hitter 
Kristy Gerardot combined for 25 kills, while sophomore setter 
Jorae Bradbury finished with 32 assists and three service aces. LaGrange had a team-leading 13 kills, while Gerardot added 12 kills and 11 digs.
Sophomore libero 
Kayla Heldman finished with a match-high 19 digs and three aces, while senior defensive specialist 
Krista Coccaro added 14 digs
Against Ferris State (3-0), the Eagles held a slim lead midway through the opening stanza, but an 8-1 run by the host Bulldogs put the Eagles into a 23-17 deficit. USI fought off set-point three times before settling for the three-point loss in the opener.
The Eagles could not find any rhythm in the second frame as the Bulldogs held USI to a negative attacking percentage. Ferris State used a 13-5 run to create separation en route to the win and a two-set cushion in the match.
USI battled back-and-forth with Ferris State throughout much of the third frame, but the Bulldogs went on a late 5-1 surge to win the game and clinch the match in three sets.
LaGrange led USI in the loss with 11 kills and a .500 attacking percentage, while Heldman had a match-high 12 digs.
USI returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. in Romeoville, Illinois, as it opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play against East Division rival Lewis University.
