Volleyball gets taste of GLVC West Division

EVANSVILLE, Ind.—After amassing a 5-2 record throughout its first run through the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division schedule, the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team will gets its first glimpse of the GLVC West Division starting Wednesday at 7 p.m. when it travels to St. Louis to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis in a non-conference match.

The Missouri-St. Louis contest is the first of five straight matches against the GLVC West Division for the Screaming Eagles, who enter this week tied for second in the East Division. USI hosts Rockhurst University Saturday at 5 p.m. and GLVC-newcomer William Jewell College Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center.

Game coverage, including live stats for all three matches and live video for USI's GLVC contests against Rockhurst and William Jewell, can be accessed at gousieagles.com.

USI (7-4, 5-2 GLVC) is coming off a three-set road win over Saint Joseph's College this past Saturday that saw the Eagles attack at a .315 clip and snap a brief two-match skid. Senior middle blocker Danielle LaGrange and freshman outside hitter Lauren DeShaney combined for 23 kills and a .541 attacking percentage to lead the Eagles.

For the season, LaGrange continues to lead the Eagles with 3.58 kills and 1.00 blocks per set, while DeShaney is averaging 2.55 kills per frame.

Although Wednesday's match with the Tritons is a non-conference match, it will have an affect on the Eagles' strength of schedule in the Midwest Region. Missouri-St. Louis (8-4, 5-2 GLVC), which advanced to the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament a year ago, is currently second in the West Division and has won five of its last seven matches. The Eagles defeated the Tritons in four sets last year in St. Louis.

When USI hosts Rockhurst Saturday, it will mark the first meeting between the two programs since the Eagles won a thrilling five-set contest over the Hawks last season in the first round of the GLVC Tournament. It was the first time in the program's history that USI has defeated the Hawks on the volleyball court.

Rockhurst (5-7, 3-4 GLVC), which visits Northwest Missouri State University Tuesday, has won two of its last three matches after starting the conference season with a 1-3 mark. The Hawks are coming off a four-set loss to Quincy University.

USI's match with William Jewell Sunday is the first-ever meeting between the Eagles and the Cardinals on the volleyball court. The Cardinals (8-4, 4-3 GLVC), who visit Kentucky Wesleyan College Saturday evening, are currently tied for third in the West Division after winning their last three matches.
