INDIANAPOLIS—The University of Southern Indiana volleyball team's fast start to its Great Lakes Valley Conference match against East Division rival University of Indianapolis Friday night came to a grinding halt as the host Greyhounds dealt the Screaming Eagles a 21-25, 29-27, 25-22, 25-17 setback.

USI (6-4, 4-2 GLVC) used an 11-2 run to open the first set and held on for a four-point victory to take a one-game lead in the match. The Eagles also jumped out to a large lead in the second set, but a 9-0 Indianapolis run allowed the Greyhounds to turn a 20-14 deficit into a 23-20 lead late in the frame.

The Eagles, who have lost back-to-back matches for the first time this season, fought off set-point six times in the second frame before the Greyhounds eventually claimed the two-point victory and evened the match at one set apiece.

Indianapolis (7-4, 5-1 GLVC), which is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Top 25 poll, jumped out to an early six-point lead in the third frame. Despite the early deficit, the Eagles battled back, eventually getting to within a single point at 23-22 late in the stanza. The Greyhounds, though, capitalized on a USI service error and used one of their 11 team blocks to stave off the Eagles and take a 2-1 advantage in the match.

USI used a 4-0 run to build a 10-6 lead in the fourth set, but the Greyhounds countered with an 11-0 run to retake the lead and put the Eagles' backs against the wall. USI closed the gap to four points later in the frame, but the Greyhounds won five of the final six rallies to grab the eight-point win and the four-set victory.

Freshman outside hitter Lauren DeShaney led the Eagles with a season-best 17 kills, while junior right side hitter Emily Meyer finished with five kills and a career-high six service aces. Senior middle blocker Danielle LaGrange added 11 kills, 14 digs, and seven blocks, while freshman outside hitter Fawn Ryan chipped in 10 kills and two blocks.

Sophomore setter Jorae Bradbury finished with a match-high 43 assists in addition to 11 digs, while sophomore libero Kayla Heldman racked up a match-high 23 digs. Senior defensive specialist Krista Coccaro also had 10 digs.

The Eagles return to action Saturday at 3 p.m. when they travel to Rensselaer, Indiana, to take on Saint Joseph's College.
