BIG RAPIDS, Mich.—Senior middle blocker Danielle LaGrange and sophomore middle blocker Emily Diedrich combined for 26 kills and a .553 attacking percentage as the University of Southern Indiana volleyball team swept Midwest Region foe Lake Superior State University 25-21, 25-20, 25-15 Friday afternoon to bounce back from a tough loss in its season-opener earlier in the day.

LaGrange, who finished with 13 kills and a .476 attacking percentage, tallied five kills and a .833 attacking percentage in the opening set. The Eagles, who used an 8-3 run early in the opening frame to create separation, fought off a late rally by the Lakers to earn the win and forge a one-set lead.

Diedrich, who had 13 kills and a .647 attacking percentage, shined in the second set as she racked up five kills and a .714 attacking clip. USI, which overcame an early 7-2 deficit, used a 7-1 run to close the second frame and build a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Eagles, who got 37 assists and six digs from sophomore setter Jorae Bradbury, dominated the third and final set as they attacked at a .385 clip and had a .730 side-out percentage.

USI, which hit just .084 in a 25-15, 25-19, 30-28 loss to California University of Pennsylvania earlier in the day, finished its match against Lake Superior State (0-2) with a .316 overall attacking percentage.

In USI's first match, the Eagles found life offensively in the third set after struggling in the first two frames. Behind a solid performance from junior setter Ashley King, who came off the bench in the third set to record 10 assists, USI hit .394 in the third frame.

The Vulcans (1-0), though, used an 8-2 run to build a commanding lead in the opening frame; then used an 8-0 spurt in the second set to rebound from a 4-0 deficit and build a two-set lead in the match.

USI, which trailed 5-1 early in the third set, fought off match-point three times before succumbing to their opposition on the fourth attempt.

LaGrange led USI with 10 kills, while sophomore libero Kayla Heldman added a match-high 14 digs. Senior defensive specialist Krista Coccaro had a team-best 11 digs in the win over Lake Superior State.

The Eagles conclude the Ferris State University Invitational Saturday when they take on Upper Iowa University at 8 a.m. (CST) and Ferris State at 11 a.m. (CST).
