USI concludes homestand with two GLVC matches

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team concludes a three-match homestand with a pair of GLVC matches this weekend at Strassweg Field. The Screaming Eagles are hosting Missouri University of Science & Technology Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Drury University Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

Game coverage, including live stats for all matches, can be accessed at gousieagles.com.

USI is coming off a heartbreaking start to the GLVC season, losing a painful 2-1 double-overtime decision at Bellarmine University and an upsetting 3-2 defeat at the hands of top-ranked Northern Kentucky University. The Eagles had the lead for over 86 minutes against Bellarmine before the Knight tied the match and posted the win in the second overtime period.

In the 3-2 loss to the Norse in the home opener, USI came from behind twice and missed an opportunity to knot up the scoreboard, 3-3, late when a shot hit the post.

For the season, USI's four goals have come off the foot of four different players. Junior midfielder Jeffrey McClure (Indianapolis, Indiana) scored the first goal of the year against Davis & Elkins College; sophomore forward Rush Dugger (Hanson, Kentucky) found the back of the net at Bellarmine, while senior forward Mauricio Paniagua (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) and freshman forward Brock Gourley (Evansville, Indiana) had the goals against NKU.

Between the posts, junior goalkeeper Ben Dempsey (Evansville, Indiana) has been solid for the Eagles despite the 1-3-0 record. Dempsey has a 1.43 goals against average and 18 saves in the first four games, including a shutout.

The Miners of Missouri S&T (3-1-0, 1-1-0 GLVC) started the year with a pair of non-conference victories before splitting the first two GLVC games last weekend. Missouri S&T dropped its conference opener at Rockhurst University, 1-0, but bounced back to defeat William Jewell College, 2-0.

The all-time series between USI and Missouri S&T is tied 10-10-2, but the Miners have won seven of the last nine matches.

The Panthers of Drury (3-2-0, 1-1-0 GLVC), who beat Harding University, 1-0, Tuesday night and travel to Kentucky Wesleyan College Friday before coming to Evansville, have split four matches during the first two weekends of the 2011 season. Drury opened the 2011 GLVC season with a 2-1 overtime loss at William Jewell before getting a 1-0 win at home over Rockhurst.

USI trails the all-time series with Drury, 6-1-1, after stopping the losing streak to the Panthers last fall with a 1-0 win at Strassweg Field.
