USI upsets NKU, 3-1

EVANSVILLE. Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana women's soccer team scored its first three goals of the year and upset ninth-ranked Northern Kentucky University, 3-1, in the home opener at Strassweg Field. USI rises to 1-2-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the GLVC, while NKU falls to 3-1-0, 1-1-0 GLVC.

The Norse got on the scoreboard first when forward Stacie Volker scored 2:07 into the first half. The Screaming Eagles would bounce back just over 20 minutes later to even the score, 1-1.

USI freshman forward Makenzie Brinker (Evansville, Indiana) drew the Eagles even with the Norse and picked up the team's first goal of the year at 23:53. Brinker scored her first collegiate goal off a crossing pass from junior forward Susan Ellsperman (Newburgh, Indiana).

After the first half ended in a draw, the Eagles did not wait long after halftime to take their first lead of the season. Ellspersman started USI's second scoring play with a long pass to sophomore midfielder Jessica Scott (Louisville, Kentucky), who crossed the ball to sophomore forward #Julia Kohnen (Florissant, Missouri) for the 2-1 advantage at 53:12.

The goal was Kohnen's first of the year and the seventh of her two-year career.

The Eagles would seal the victory at 60:31 when junior midfielder Paige Nuelle (St. Louis, Missouri) headed in a corner kick from senior forward Meagan Kempf (Evansville, Indiana). The goal was Nuelle's first of the year and eighth of her career.

USI senior goalkeeper Stephanie Bodamer (Highland, Indiana) posted her first win of the year. She faced 20 NKU shots, eight on-goal, and made seven saves.

The Eagles return to the road Wednesday when they travel to the University of North Alabama for a 6 p.m. match. USI comes back to Strassweg Field Friday at 5 p.m. when it resumes GLVC action against Missouri University of Science & Technology.
