EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Southern Indiana men's soccer team was projected to place 13
th in the GLVC by the league's 16 head coaches in 2011.
Northern Kentucky University, the defending NCAA Division II National Champion and reigning GLVC Champion, was predicted to capture the GLVC Championship again this fall. The Norse, who visit Strassweg Field on September 11 for USI's home-opener, collected 217 total points in the poll and 11 of the 16 first-place votes.
The Eagles, the all-time leader with 10 GLVC titles, are coming off an 11th-place showing in 2010. USI was 9-8-0 overall, 6-8-0 GLVC, in its second season under Head Coach #
Mat Santoro#. The 2010 record was the first positive mark for the Eagles since 2003.
The 2011 USI squad is comprised of 25 players – 10 returning players and redshirts and 14 newcomers. Junior midfielder
Austin Andrekus (St. Charles, Illinois) is the Eagles top returning scorer with 13 points on six goals and one assist.
NKU, which finished second in the GLVC regular season and finished 2010 with a 20-2-3 overall mark, was followed in the poll by Lewis University, which was in second place with 196 total points. Lewis won the GLVC regular season last fall with a league record of 10-3-1 and an overall mark of 10-6-1.
Missouri University of Science & Technology was third with 189 total points, while Quincy University was selected fourth with 164 points. Drury University rounded out the top five with 160 points.
The 16 GLVC men's soccer teams will compete in a 15-game round-robin schedule during the
regular season with the top eight teams earning a berth to the GLVC Tournament. The top four
seeds will host quarterfinal matches on campus with the four remaining teams heading to the top remaining seed's site for the semifinals and final on Nov. 4 and 6.
USI opens two-a-day practices Monday.
